| A Ljova Project |
| “I think my music may prove to be an initial disappointment for anyone except the liberated ones…” are the first words of Ljova’s artist statement; fortunately, I appear to be liberated. Admittedly, the disclaimer almost proved true to even my tolerant ears, as “Moody Sax Piece” initially threw me for a loop. My first thought was that this Sax was indeed so “moody” that I almost was going to suggest the piece be renamed “Bad 80’s Casio Keyboard Sax Piece.” With time, however, the gentle progression unfolded. I can look past the apparent MIDI setup shortcomings and see a truly beautiful early rendering of a composition that would be far more well received if recorded (in it’s final state) by a live orchestral ensemble of some kind. What further broke the ice was the goldenly mellow track “Mexicana.” This much more polished production had me from the first note, and really sets up a sparkling midsection change nicely. With such command of styles, moods, and instrumentation, Ljova should have no problem translating compositions such as these into a strong career. “Mexicana” truly impressed me, and now I’ve decided I just need to finish my first film so I can sneak it into the soundtrack somehow. Cerveza, anyone?
